Percussionists in OKYO perform in up to three full ensembles: OYO, OYP, and OYW, as well as independently as the OKYO Percussion Ensemble. Percussion needs are determined by OKYO’s artistic staff and students are placed accordingly. In the fall, and periodically throughout the rest of the season, students also rehearse chamber music as part of the Percussion Ensemble.
Typical Percussion Students: While auditions are based on playing level and not age, most students are in grades 8 through 12, with some younger students placed in the ensemble based on audition results.
Conductor: James Segovia is the conductor for Percussion Ensemble. See HERE for more information about Mr. Segovia.
Rehearsals and Performances: Rehearsals take place each Monday night September through May in the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University. There are periodic breaks scheduled that generally follow the public school academic calendar. Season schedules are made available to families each summer. In addition to performing concerts with OYO, OYP and OYW, Percussion Ensemble performs two to three concerts per year, depending on the season. Most performances take place at the Performing Arts Theatre at Oklahoma City Community College.
Auditions: Auditions are required for placement in Percussion Ensemble and take place each spring.
2022-23 Membership Dues: Percussion Membership Dues are $685, and Special Scholarships are available for those who need assistance.
Family Discounts of 15% are also available for households with more than one student participating in OKYO ensembles.
What to Bring to Rehearsal: Students should bring mallets, sticks and necessary accessories, music and a pencil to each rehearsal.
