Kris Markes

Executive Director
Kris Markes is delighted to serve as Executive Director of Oklahoma Youth Orchestras, where she brings her lifelong love of music and enthusiasm for supporting young musicians. Growing up in a family of musicians and educators, Kris has always been surrounded by music—starting with the oboe in middle school and carrying that passion into every step of her career.

Before joining OKYO, Kris spent 20 years with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in roles ranging from Education Director to General Manager to Interim Executive Director. During her time there, she helped create award-winning education programs, built strong partnerships with arts and community organizations, and championed a collaborative spirit among musicians and staff. Her work connected her with educators, local artists, internationally known guest performers, and leaders across Oklahoma City.

Kris previously served on the OKYO Board of Directors and stays active in the community by volunteering including support of the Oklahoma City Orchestra League, the John Rex School PTA, and the Classen SAS High School at Northeast’s Band and Orchestra Boosters, where she currently serves as orchestra president.

Originally from Arkansas, Kris holds an MBA in Arts Management from Oklahoma City University and a Bachelor of Arts in Music, summa cum laude, from Arkansas Tech University. She lives in Oklahoma City with her husband, Peter, an Assistant Professor of Music Education and the 2014 Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year, and their sons, Patrick and Vincent, who keep the household busy with their ever-growing musical talents and a steady stream of new adventures.
